Should units of measure be converted in a translation?
Short answer
Not in a certified translation of an official document. Reproduce the source figure and unit exactly; if a conversion helps the reader, add it in brackets or a translator's note rather than replacing the original value.
Certified translations are read as evidence of what the source document says. A land title expressed in rai, ngan and square wah, a Thai date in the Buddhist Era, or a weight in a local unit must appear as written, because the receiving authority may compare the translation against the original line by line. Silent conversion looks like a discrepancy even when the arithmetic is right.
Technical and marketing material is the opposite case: there, converting units, voltages and paper sizes to what the target market uses is part of doing the job properly. Decide which register you are in before starting, state the convention in the project brief, and apply it consistently — mixing the two within one document is what triggers queries.
