Should a document be apostilled before or after translation?
Short answer
It depends on the receiving authority. Some want the apostille on the original document with a translation attached; others want the translation itself certified and then authenticated. Confirm before ordering either step.
Getting the order wrong is expensive because both steps have to be repeated. A single email to the receiving office describing the exact document usually settles it.
The HCCH Apostille Convention has been in force for Thailand since 22 December 2024. For documents moving between contracting states this replaces the consular legalisation chain, but it does not change the receiving authority's translation rule.
