Can I bring my own interpreter to a Thai government office?

Short answer

Usually yes, but the office decides. Some offices accept any competent adult, others require an interpreter who will sign the record or who is on their own list. Ask the specific office before the appointment.

Where the interpreter signs an official record — for example at a district office (amphoe) for a marriage registration — that person effectively takes responsibility for the rendering, so the office may set conditions such as identification, a written declaration or independence from the parties.

For court proceedings the position is stricter: the court appoints or approves the interpreter. Plan for the court's decision rather than assuming an interpreter you bring will be admitted.
