Is a marriage registered abroad recognised in Thailand?

Short answer

A marriage validly formed abroad is generally recognised, but to be reflected in Thai records the foreign marriage certificate normally has to be authenticated, translated and recorded with the relevant Thai authority.

Recognition and registration are different things. Many people find their foreign marriage is recognised in principle but cannot be used at a district office until the certificate has been legalised or apostilled and translated.

Since 22 December 2024 the HCCH Apostille Convention is in force for Thailand, which changes the authentication route for certificates from contracting states. Confirm the accepted form with the office receiving the document.
