Adoption involving a foreign adoptive parent

In short

Adoption in Thailand is regulated and, where the adoptive parent is foreign, involves the responsible child-welfare authority in addition to registration. Intercountry adoption also engages the rules of the receiving country, so both sides must be planned together.

Timelines are set by the authorities and include assessment and, commonly, a probationary period. This is not a document-processing service and outcomes are decided by the competent authority — we assist with documentation, translation and legalisation only.

Foreign documents in the file — background checks, home study reports, income evidence — need authentication before Thai authorities will accept them. Since 22 December 2024 documents from HCCH Apostille contracting states commonly carry an apostille; confirm the accepted form with the receiving authority.

Watch out

Starting the Thai side before checking the home country's recognition rules. A Thai adoption the receiving country will not recognise creates a status problem for the child. Scope, turnaround and fees are confirmed by IVC staff by phone, LINE or email — this site does not publish prices.
