When can a temporary two-year Thai driving licence be converted to a five-year one?
Short answer
A first Thai licence is issued as a temporary licence valid for two years. It can be renewed as a five-year licence once the temporary licence has been held for at least one year, provided it is still valid or within the renewal window set by the Department of Land Transport.
Renewal is done at a Department of Land Transport office and normally involves the standard physical aptitude tests — colour vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and reaction — plus the required e-learning session. A medical certificate and a current proof of address in the name used on the licence are also part of the file, and both have short validity periods, so collect them close to the appointment.
Do not let it lapse. If the temporary licence has expired for long enough, the office may require the written test again, and after a longer gap the practical test as well — turning a renewal into a fresh application. Where the licence and your identity documents spell your name differently, resolve the spelling first; the office will not renew against a mismatched name.
