What must I do before leaving Thailand during a permitted period of stay?

Short answer

Obtain a re-entry permit before departure. A permission to stay obtained through an extension is cancelled the moment you leave the country unless you hold a valid single or multiple re-entry permit — a multiple-entry visa is not the same thing.

Re-entry permits are applied for on form TM8 at an immigration office or at the international airport before departure, in single or multiple form. Airport counters are convenient but queue-dependent, so travellers on tight connections usually apply in advance at their local office. Holders of certain visa classes — LTR, some BOI and Smart Visa categories — have different arrangements, so confirm the rule for your own class rather than the general one.

Two follow-ups on return. The re-entry permit preserves the original permitted-to-stay date; it does not extend it, so the extension deadline is unchanged by the trip. And the 90-day report clock restarts from the new arrival, while the accommodation provider should file a fresh TM30 for your return — both are commonly overlooked after a short trip abroad.
