Is health insurance required for long-stay visas in Thailand?
Short answer
For several long-stay categories, yes. Health insurance meeting a specified coverage level is a condition of certain retirement and long-term resident categories, and the required coverage, the accepted insurers and whether a deposit may be substituted are set by the rules of the specific category — they are not uniform across visa types.
Policies issued outside Thailand are accepted in some categories provided they meet the coverage requirement and are evidenced in an accepted form, often with a certification from the insurer. Where the requirement is expressed in a currency amount, the check is on the policy limits for inpatient and outpatient cover, not on the premium or the sum you have paid.
Renewals catch people out more often than applications: the policy has to remain in force through the permitted period of stay, and an extension application will be examined against the cover in place on the day. Diary the policy expiry alongside the extension date, and confirm the current requirement for your category before renewing.
