Family relocation planning for expatriates
In short
A family move touches immigration status for each member, school admission and credential recognition for children, housing contracts, health cover and tax residence. The sequence matters because school admission and dependent visas each rely on documents produced by the other track.
Schools commonly require previous transcripts and, for some pathways, recognition or equivalence of the prior qualification. Those documents come from abroad and need authentication — since 22 December 2024 an apostille is the usual route for documents from HCCH contracting states, subject to what the receiving institution accepts.
Tax residence is triggered by presence of 180 days or more in a tax year under section 41 of the Revenue Code, which can arrive in the first year without anyone planning for it. Reviewing the family's remittance pattern before the move is easier than restating it afterwards.
