What incentives does BOI promotion actually give?
Short answer
Board of Investment promotion bundles tax and non-tax incentives: corporate income tax exemption or reduction for eligible activities, import duty relief on machinery and raw materials, permission to own land for the promoted project, and streamlined visa and work permit handling through the One Stop Service Center.
The tax side depends entirely on the activity category in the BOI's investment promotion list — exemption periods differ by group, and merit-based additions can apply for R&D, training or targeted locations. Treat any general figure you read online as indicative and check the current announcement for your specific activity code, because the lists are revised.
For most foreign-owned businesses the non-tax incentives matter more than the tax holiday. Permission to hold majority foreign ownership in activities that would otherwise need a Foreign Business Licence, the right to own land used for the promoted project, and predictable visa/work permit processing change how the company can actually operate. A loss-making start-up gains little from a tax exemption but a great deal from the ownership and staffing side.
